Pixy Liao

With a generous dose of humor, intimacy, and playfulness, photographer Pixy Liao (Shanghai, 1979) puts her own unique spin on the theme of love and relationships. Together with her partner Takahiro Morooka (Moro), she forms the heart of her long-running project Experimental Relationship, in which the world becomes their stage. Whether at home or far away, Pixy captures their romance in bold, disarming images — always with herself firmly in control. Liao’s work challenges you to think differently about gender roles, power dynamics, and cultural expectations. She flips traditional roles effortlessly — he lies down, she stands; he’s nude, she’s dressed; she’s behind the camera, he’s in front. Her work opens up a world of possibility where things don’t have to follow the usual rules. And that’s exactly what makes it so freeing and inspiring.

Concept
For this vibrant exhibition, we joined forces with curator Sito Rozema. Starting from a place of optimism and openness, they created a design that beautifully complements Pixy’s cheerful visual language. The space feels light, warm, and free — just like the photographs themselves. The result is a sparkling experience that invites visitors to step into the colorful world of Pixy and Moro.

What we made
The exhibition is built like a visual dreamscape. Custom-designed wallpaper prints, inspired by the colors and shapes in Pixy’s work, bring the walls to life. Bold colors and layered graphics enhance the artworks and turn the space into a joyful, intimate cocoon where everything fits together.

It begins with a vibrant title set in playful, legible typography that matches the tone of the exhibition. Scattered throughout the space, you hear music by Pimo, the musical duo formed by Pixy and Moro. And as the perfect finishing touch, the show ends with two red cinema chairs, where visitors can sit and watch the music video they made together — a charming moment of love, humor, and creative expression.

Sparkles
Experimental Relationship is a celebration of love on your own terms. Full of quirky images, clever twists, and tender rebellion, it’s a warm invitation to look at things differently — with a wink, an open heart, and maybe even a fresh perspective on your own relationship.
