Mieren in het raaigras

Writing is much more than following rules. It is a way of understanding yourself and the world around you, questioning what you encounter, and sharing those discoveries with others. In Mieren in het raaigras, authors Sare Bakkers and Lot Hulshof invite readers to experience writing as a playful and creative process rather than a search for perfection. Through philosophy, literary examples, practical exercises, and imaginative reflections, the book encourages readers to develop their own writing voice and discover the endless possibilities of language.

Concept
Designed for anyone who loves to write, with a special focus on young readers, the publication embraces curiosity and experimentation. The graphic design translates this mindset into a fresh, open, and approachable visual language. Rather than presenting writing as something fixed or intimidating, the book celebrates exploration, allowing words, ideas, and illustrations to wander freely across its pages. Every design decision was made to lower the threshold for writing while sparking creativity and joy.

What did we create?
The design combines a modern, friendly typeface with a vibrant palette of neon pink and deep green, printed in Pantone inks that make every page feel lively and energetic. Bold illustrations by Jimmie Balster give the publication its own unmistakable personality, while ants appear throughout the book as recurring companions. They wander through the illustrations, hide between the texts, and create an additional visual narrative that rewards curious readers.

One of the book’s most playful details can be found right at the beginning. Instead of a traditional author overview, all writers, philosophers, and literary figures referenced throughout the publication are connected through an illustrated ant tunnel. This visual network reflects how ideas, stories, and inspiration travel between generations of writers.

As both an inspiring handbook and a practical workbook, readability was essential. Clear chapter openers, alternating color combinations, and distinct visual cues guide readers effortlessly through the content. Exercises are highlighted in neon pink, while the main texts are printed in deep green, making both easy to navigate. The book is finished with an exposed bright pink thread binding that allows it to lie completely flat, inviting readers to write, sketch, underline, and return to its pages again and again.

Sparkles
Mieren in het raaigras transforms writing into an adventure full of curiosity, imagination, and discovery. From its vibrant colors and playful illustrations to its thoughtful production details, every element encourages readers to experiment, embrace imperfection, and find a place where their own words can truly feel at home.
